PREFACE

The HyFlex Collaborative Conferences, organized annually through the partnership of the Academy for the Advancement of Teaching, Leadership, and Schools (AATLAS) and the international HyFlex Learning Community, have become a central scholarly forum for examining, refining, and advancing Hybrid Flexible (HyFlex) education. Since 2023, this gathering of researchers, faculty, instructional designers, K12 educators, technologists, and institutional leaders has contributed empirical insights and theoretical frameworks that address the evolving post-pandemic learning landscape. As institutions continue to confront shifting enrollment patterns, emerging technologies, and demands for more inclusive and resilient instructional models, HyFlex has moved from an emergent innovation to an established area of educational research and practice.

This anthology serves as the first scholarly collection of conference proceedings from 2023 onward. It aims to preserve the intellectual contributions of the HyFlex Collaborative participants and to offer a long-term view of the field’s development. The works included here demonstrate the evolving relationship between theory and practice, documenting early models of HyFlex implementation, multimodal learning analytics, program-level design, AI-supported asynchronous learning, K-20 applications, and pedagogies of care within flexible multimodal environments.

Each paper and presentation shows a dedication to thorough research and to the core values that define HyFlex learning: Learner Choice, Equivalency, Reusability, and Accessibility. These values guide instructional design and act as ethical commitments for learner-centered, fair, and technologically supported education. Across different institutional and cultural contexts, contributors examine how these principles are put into practice, influence student experiences, and shape scalable, sustainable educational models.

The editors wish to recognize the global HyFlex community whose ongoing scholarship, collaboration, and innovation make this anthology possible. We also sincerely thank the researchers who contributed their work to the proceedings featured here. May this volume serve as both a foundational archive and a springboard for future research, collaboration, and transformative HyFlex practices.
